Diploma programs offered:
Home Health Aide ---3 weeks
Students learn the basics of the home health care industry, communication skills, understanding client’s needs and reporting, observing and recording client information. Students also learn more about the home care aide, special care needs of older adults and mothers and newborns. This class also covers the basics of dealing with the client and the family when the client has a terminal illness, mental illness and mental health and emergencies and how to prevent infections, bed making, vital signs, elimination procedures, personal care, body mechanics and special needs and procedures.
Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide ---6 weeks
Perform nursing assistant skills related to the hospital, long term care, subacute care, assisted living. Content includes legal and ethical responsibilities, principles of nutrition, perform physical comfort and safety functions, apply principles of infection control includes HIV/AIDS. Collecting specimens for laboratory analysis, safety procedures, and medical terminology. Domestic Violence including elder and child abuse. Employability skills.
EKG/Phlebotomy--- 6 and 12 weeks
EKG
Students are provided theoretical and practical skills needed to work in a healthcare facility. Course content includes anatomy and physiology of the heart, preparing a patient for the EKG, performing and interpreting basic cardiac dysrhythmias including 12 lead placements. Recognizing abnormal EKG’s, the possible causes and the physicians’ possible treatments for the abnormalities. Additional clock hours of clinical rotation training in the selected allied health areas. The student are encouraged to take the National Certification exam.
Phlebotomy
Students are provided theoretical and practical skills needed to work in a healthcare facility. Course content includes the practice of technical skills that are required to collect specimens for analysis while using proper infection control procedures including HIV/AIDS. Obtaining blood samples by the request of a physician, being aware of the important legal issues, including patient confidentiality and informed consent. Interpersonal skills are important for interacting with a large number of people, including patients and medical personnel. Preparation for the National Phlebotomy Certification Exam. Additional clock hours of clinical rotation training in the selected allied health areas.
Patient Care Technician----18 weeks
The class expands the traditional role of the nursing assistant by offering a broad foundation of knowledge and skills. Students are introduced to health service delivery system, patient care, EKG, phlebotomy, ethics, and caring for patients in a home setting. The PCT is responsible for infection control, collecting and recording patient data, effectively responding to emergency situations, drawing blood, and monitoring vital signs. Completion of required elements allows the student to be prepared to take the Florida State Nursing Assistant Certification Examination in order to become a Certified Nursing Assistant and the National Phlebotomy Certification exam in order to become a Certified Phlebotomist. The student may also take the National PCT certification exam which includes EKG and Phlebotomy.
Medical Billing/Coding- 31 weeks
The contents include medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, grammar and punctuation, health-care delivery systems, health information services, ethical and legal responsibilities. Knowledge of Insurance agencies and the proper billing and coding procedure. Information for reimbursement of patient services for the healthcare providers. The contents include transcribing the doctors written and verbal orders and progress notes into readable text. Use appropriate medical and scientific terminology. Apply rules of English grammar and punctuation. Utilize medical references. Operate word processing/transcription equipment. Practice safety and security specific to medical transcriber. Explain the role of health information services. Demonstrate ethical and legal principles with regard to the use of medical records. The student at the end of the program is encouraged to take the National certification for Medical Billing and Coding.
Practical Nursing- 45 weeks
This program will include laboratory, classroom and clinical practice for students wishing to be prepared to pass the Florida Licensing Exam for Practical Nurses and to be well prepared to serve as a Licensed Practical Nurse. The knowledge and skills taught are consistent with the role and scope of practice defined by the Florida Board of Nursing and is to be performed under the direction and guidance of a Registered Nurse or a licensed Physician, It includes education in the areas of Medical/Surgical Nursing, as well as the special and unique nursing care needs of pediatric, obstetrical and geriatric patients. It includes nursing care skills and applications needed for a variety of settings such as acute, long term, and care in the home. It will cover such topics as the vocational role and functions for the Practical Nurse, Foundations and Fundamentals of Nursing Care, Infection control, Body Structure and Function, Human Growth and Development, Personal and Family Care in Multiple Environments, Mental Health Concepts, Nutrition, Pharmacology and Medicine Administration, Ethical and Legal Aspects of Practice, Interpersonal Relationships, Current Issues and Employability Skills.
